At least 5 humans had been killed, and numerous others have been lacking after an informal gold mine collapsed in northern Kenya, officers and nearby media said.
The bodies of 5 miners had been recovered from the Hillo artisanal mine, and another three human beings had been unaccounted for, regional commissioner Paul Rotich instructed Reuters by way of cellphone late on Friday.
“Reports from rescuers, police and our chiefs advocate at (least) 8 casual miners have been in the mining ground whilst the partitions collapsed and buried them alive,” Rotich said.
Two injured miners have been taken to health center, Kenyan broadcaster NTV pronounced on Saturday morning.
“The location caved in because of the rains,” Marsabit county commissioner David Saruni told NTV.
Mining had continued despite government closing the mine close to the Ethiopian border in March, after several humans had been killed in clashes among neighborhood communities over access to the area, Citizen TV stated.
