Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has responded strongly to Kericho Governor Eric Mutai’s remarks mocking his presidential ambitions, asserting that running for the presidency is his constitutional right.
Salasya clarified that his recent trip to Kericho was not meant to undermine anyone but was simply part of his groundwork for his 2027 presidential campaign.
Governor Eric Mutai’s remarks were triggered by Salasya’s visit to Kericho. In a viral video, Mutai addressed residents, dismissing Salasya’s presidential bid and questioning his suitability for the country’s top office.
“Can Peter Salasya be president? Really? I’d rather run myself,” Mutai said. “When a mad person comes here, let them speak whatever they want and move on.”
Salasya, who has been traversing the country to rally support for his 2027 presidential bid, made a stop in Kericho on May 30.
In a statement issued on Thursday, June 5, the MP thanked Kericho residents for their hospitality, expressing surprise and appreciation for the warm reception and strong backing he received from the youth.
“Kericho residents truly love me. I didn’t visit to undermine anyone but to promote my 2027 presidential ambitions. I was overwhelmed by the warm support, especially from the youth,” Salasya said.
Responding to Governor Mutai’s remarks on June 5, Salasya defended his leadership record, pointing to his development efforts in Mumias East.
“To Governor Mutai, it’s unfortunate that you referred to me as ‘bangi’. The progress I’ve made in Mumias East through the Constituency Development Fund far surpasses what you’ve delivered in Kericho,” he stated.
In contrast, Mutai emphasized Kericho’s peaceful nature and the residents’ openness to different views.
“Let’s avoid insults. Kericho is a peaceful place. We allow everyone to speak their mind. But as Kericho people, we know our path and our journey,” he said.
Salasya officially declared his intention to run for president on April 28, joining the growing list of 2027 hopefuls.
