
Wafula Chebukati is the former IEBC Chairman (2017-2023) who passed away at the age of 63.
His death came after a prolonged battle with illness, and he was survived by his wife and three children.

Chebukati’s wife Mary Wanyonyi is a distinguished career woman who holds a Bachelor’s in Commerce and an MBA.

She is the Chairperson of the Commission on Revenue Allocation (CRA) as appointed by President Ruto in June 2023. She is a Certified Public Accountant and mediator, and a member of ICPAK and ICIFA.
Together they have three kids: Rachel, Emmanuel, and Jonathan.
1. Rachel Chebukati:

Rachel is a lawyer and currently works as a Senior State Counsel at the Office of the Attorney General and the Department of Justice. She was promoted to this role in July 2021, after previously working as a State Counsel.
She studied law at the University of Dundee and worked at well-known law firms, including Simmons & Simmons, before joining public service.
2. Emmanuel Chebukati:

Emmanuel is a cloud security engineer. He started his career in 2015 as an IT consultant after going through the Presidential Digital Talent Programme. He is the co-founder of Hepta Analytics, a data analytics company based in Kenya and Rwanda.
3. Jonathan Chebukati: He is the youngest, has kept a low profile with little public information about his career.

Wafula Chebukati Illness and Death
Chebukati was diagnosed with brain cancer in April 2023, just months after leaving office.
He underwent two surgeries, but the tumor kept recurring.
His treatment included medical visits to Germany in 2023 and 2024, where he stayed for months at a time. Despite these efforts, his health continued to decline.
In December 2024, he was hospitalized again and later discharged as his family considered further treatment options.
On February 12, 2025, he was admitted for chest complications. Three days later, he was moved to the intensive care unit. On the night of February 20, he suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away at 11:35 PM.
Chebukati will be buried on March 8 in Sabata, Kitale, Trans Nzoia County. An autopsy is expected to be conducted before the burial.
