In May 2024, Comedian Eddie Butita, found himself unexpectedly barred from Dave Chappelle’s sold-out show at Louis Leakey Auditorium in Nairobi.
Comedian Njugush also opined that Dave Chapelle snubbed the Kenyan Government. This is because Chapelle did not meet with any Kenyan government officials, including President Ruto, unlike his visit to Rwanda, where he met with President Paul Kagame.
But why snub Butita?
Despite having purchased a ticket, Butita was informed just a day before the event that he could not attend.
The news came as Butita returned from a U.S. tour with President Ruto. When he received a call from the show’s organizers, they delivered the surprising message: “You are banned from attending.”
Perplexed, Butita sought an explanation.
The organizers clarified that the policy was to exclude comedians and media personnel.
“They called me the day before the event and told me I was banned,” Butita recalled.
“They said comedians and anyone linked to the media were not allowed. Maybe they thought we’d steal his jokes.” Butita quipped.
They also revealed that Butita’s name was flagged due to his high profile.
“You’re so well-known,” they said, implying that his presence might pose a risk.
Butita shared his frustration, expressing disappointment over the ban. Many fans were equally puzzled, questioning the decision to exclude a local comedian from such a high-profile event.
Despite the setback, Butita remains positive, using the experience as another story to tell and maybe, a joke for a future show.
